Chapter 5

She waited for the guys to leave the cabin at nine before she got up and showered. As she grabbed yogurt from the fridge, the empty shelves reminded her they would leave the next day. All of a sudden, this trip had become much too short. She would more than happily put up with Thor and Todd for another month, if just she could prolong her stay.

In the afternoon, she went back into town. Window-shopping on the same streets she’d walked with Sam a few days before made her lonely. She chastised herself for being so melodramatic when it had been her decision to have sex with him. Because that was all it had been. In ten days, she had her next competition scheduled, another one a week later. Her schedule was full till the end of March, and in August it started all over again. She didn’t have time for a relationship—not if she wanted to avoid the trap her mother had fallen into.

She grimaced when she realized she was having the discussion with herself.

She bought her dad a quirky tie she loved the moment she saw it. She expected him to put it in his closet and leave it there because it was “too crazy” because of the moustache drawing on it, but she hoped he would get the message and chill. He could be so uptight sometimes, especially when it came to her snowboarding.

The previous night with Sam made her realize that if she wanted something, she had to go for it. Sorting things out with her dad would be her priority this Christmas.

In the evening, everyone from the cabin went to a club in town to celebrate the end of filming. She didn’t plan on staying long because she had to go to the airport early the next morning.

She made sure she caught a ride in the second car because Sam had climbed into the first one. He’d tried to speak with her after she returned from her shopping trip, but she kept finding excuses. It would be difficult to hear him say it was over, more difficult still to say it herself. Because they both knew this was the end of the road for them.

She wore the only dress she’d brought with her—a black, sleek piece. She hadn’t planned on wearing it, but then changed her mind at the last second. As her farewell to the guys, she would show them she was a girl through and through.

Sam’s eyes went dark as he watched her get out of the car in front of the club. T-square fell silent with shock as their mouths hung open. One of the cameramen, Mark, stepped up to her and offered her his hand with a brilliant smile.

“You look precious,” he said, and his British accent warmed her up. He was one of the nicest guys on the crew although his beard made him intimidating. Until he smiled.

“Thanks.”

The club was packed with skiers, snowboarders and the locals, and the music boomed.
